During a fierce hailstorm and heavy downpour in Guwahati on Sunday, a portion of the ceiling at Lokapriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport collapsed, and the roof outside the terminal building was also swept away.
During the severe weather conditions, a massive tree fell over, blocking the road to the airport. As a result, the airport authority had to halt operations and redirect six flights to different locations. Water was leaking into the airport as a result of the outlet pipes overflowing.
Flight schedules experienced disruptions as a result of intense rainfall and storm, which led to the closure of the access road due to fallen trees. Although there was some water seepage and a minor ceiling collapse, fortunately, no injuries were recorded.
Severe weather conditions have caused continuous rainfall and hailstorms in different areas of Assam, leading to destruction of properties and crops. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted that rainfall and thunderstorms will persist in Northeast India until April 4, with heavy rainfall likely in Assam, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, and Tripura within the next 24 hours. Assam and Meghalaya are expected to experience light to moderate rainfall until April 4, as per the IMD’s forecast.
