On Sunday evening, tragedy struck as a boat carrying 15 individuals capsized in the Brahmaputra river in Assam’s South Salmara-Mankachar district, resulting in the unfortunate death of a 4-year-old boy. Additionally, two individuals are currently missing and efforts are underway to locate them.
At the time of the incident, there were a total of 15 individuals aboard the boat. This unfortunate event occurred while the boat was transporting passengers from Sishumari Ghat to Nepur Alga. The State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) promptly arrived at the scene and initiated a comprehensive search and rescue mission.
A search and rescue operation are currently underway to locate a missing child and a 60-year-old man, while the SDRF team remains actively engaged in the effort. Additionally, the NDRF team is en route to provide further assistance.
In the Nagarbera area of Kamrup district, a number of houses, electric poles, and trees were severely damaged by a destructive hailstorm. This resulted in significant disruption to vehicular movement as roads were blocked by uprooted trees in various areas of the district. On March 31, the India Meteorological Department issued an ‘Orange Alert’ and predicted ‘heavy to very heavy’ rainfall in multiple locations across Assam and Meghalaya.
