The Assam State Zoo proudly announced the successful hatching of three Mandarin ducklings on Friday, May 24, marking a significant milestone for wildlife conservation. This is the first time Mandarin ducklings have hatched at the zoo, showcasing its dedication to animal care and biodiversity preservation.
Aswini Kumar, Division Forest Officer (DFO) at Assam State Zoo, shared the exciting news. He mentioned that an adult Mandarin duck pair was brought to the zoo on May 16, 2023, from Sri Chamarajendra Zoological Gardens in Mysuru, Karnataka, as part of an animal exchange program aimed at enhancing genetic diversity and conservation efforts.
Kumar emphasized that both the mother duck and ducklings are in good health and are being carefully monitored by zookeepers and veterinary staff. The successful hatching of the ducklings is a testament to the zoo’s dedication to providing a nurturing and safe environment for all its animals, reflecting its commitment to creating optimal conditions for wildlife.
Mandarin ducks, known for their vibrant colours and striking appearance, are native to East Asia and are primarily migratory. In India, they are considered uncommon winter visitors. The sighting of a Mandarin duck in the wild in Assam in February 2021, after a 118-year absence, highlighted the species’ elusive presence in the region.
The Assam State Zoo has a long history of leadership in wildlife conservation and education. The birth of the Mandarin ducklings underscores the zoo’s ongoing efforts to protect and preserve endangered species. Kumar emphasized that this joyous occasion highlights the importance of zoos in maintaining biodiversity and providing educational opportunities for the public to connect with nature.
Kumar added that the successful hatching of Mandarin ducklings not only represents a new achievement for the Assam State Zoo but also serves as an inspiring example of the positive impact dedicated conservation efforts have on protecting and nurturing endangered species.
