The Assam Rifles convened a significant assembly of former servicemen in Kalimpong, West Bengal. Dubbed the “Assam Rifles Ex-servicemen Rally,” it took place on May 18, 2024, under the auspices of Headquarters Directorate General Assam Rifles, drawing a turnout of over 500 veterans from West Bengal and neighbouring states.
Operating under the motto “Serving Those Who Served Us,” the rally aimed to re-establish connections with veterans, nurturing stronger bonds while recognizing their invaluable contributions to the nation during their active years. The event featured Lt Gen P C Nair, PVSM, AVSM, YSM, PhD, DG Assam Rifles, as the Chief Guest.
In his speech, Lt Gen P C Nair commended the dedication and sacrifices of veterans and serving soldiers, emphasizing their crucial role in safeguarding the security and prosperity of the North-East region and the nation as a whole.
The rally provided a platform to inform veterans about various benefit schemes, such as recruitment rallies, sports quotas for Assam Rifles recruitment, educational reservations, Ayushman Bharat, and the extension of the Ex-Servicemen Contributory Health Scheme (ECHS) to Assam Rifles veterans. Moreover, plans were revealed for establishing Ex-Servicemen (ESM) Cells at every unit level, adoption programs for Veer Naris and disabled veterans, and nationwide outreach initiatives.
The Director General Assam Rifles bestowed honours upon Veer Naris, Gallantry awardees, and other ex-servicemen during a felicitation ceremony. Representatives from Headquarters Directorate General Assam Rifles, Shillong, were present to address grievances and offer redressal opportunities.
The rally also provided tangible support to selected veterans by providing wheelchairs and other assistive devices. Additionally, an Ex-Servicemen Grievance Cell, Eye Camp, and an SBI Bank Help Desk were set up to cater to the diverse needs of the attendees.
