Assam is gearing up for an intense campaign as the third and final phase of the Lok Sabha elections approaches its last day, highlighted by Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma leading a massive bike rally in Guwahati today.
On May 7, the four constituencies of Guwahati, Barpeta, Kokrajhar, and Dhubri will go to polls, featuring 47 candidates vying for victory. An estimated 81 lakh voters are expected to cast their ballots in this phase.
The ruling BJP’s regional allies hold significant sway in this phase, aiming to secure parliamentary representation for indigenous and majority communities, a goal seen as bolstered by the 2023 delimitation exercise.
In the Guwahati seat, BJP’s newcomer Bijuli Kalita Medhi, a vice president of the state unit, will face a direct challenge from Congress newcomer Mira Borthakur Goswami, the president of the Assam Pradesh Mahila Congress.
The BJP has nominated candidates in 11 seats, reserving two for its key ally AGP and one for UPPL. The remaining 10 seats held elections in the earlier phases.
Assam witnessed a voter turnout of 77.35% in the second phase on April 26 and 78.25% in the first phase on April 19.
With the conclusion of the final phase, the state will finish voting for the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, paving the way for the announcement of results on June 4.
