The Assam government has introduced a new online portal that will allow indigenous residents of the state, particularly those living in vulnerable and remote areas, to apply for arms licences. This initiative is part of the state’s broader effort to enhance the security and confidence of communities facing potential threats.
Only individuals identified as original inhabitants or Indigenous Indian citizens of Assam will be eligible to apply through this platform. The eligibility criteria include residency in areas classified as sensitive by the district administration or recognised as vulnerable by security agencies.

The process for acquiring a licence will involve stringent security assessments and legal scrutiny. Authorities will conduct thorough verification and ensure compliance with arms laws before granting any licence. The arms licences issued under this system will be non-transferable and subject to periodic review and monitoring.
The decision to create this portal follows a cabinet resolution passed on May 28, aimed at addressing the long-standing concerns of indigenous communities. Areas such as Dhubri, Morigaon, Barpeta, Nagaon, South Salmara-Mankachar, Rupahi, Dhing, and Jania have been identified among the vulnerable zones where indigenous people have expressed the need for such measures.
The government believes this move will empower indigenous residents with a sense of protection and control over their safety, especially in regions with heightened security concerns.
