Approximately 4,500 contract teachers in different high schools in Assam are receiving the same salary as permanent staff and can work until they reach 60 years old. As a result, the Education Department has no current intentions to convert them to permanent positions, according to a senior government official.

Previously, Ranoj Pegu, the Education Minister of Assam, stated that there is a significant number of TET-qualified teachers, exceeding 25,000, who have been employed on a contractual basis in primary schools throughout the state. Additionally, there are 9,500 contractual teachers currently serving in primary schools. Furthermore, there are 4,500 teachers dedicated to instructing students in classes 9 and 10. In light of this, the decision has been made to provide all of these teachers with permanent appointments.

The Assam government initially hired approximately 8,000 teachers on a contractual basis in 2010 to instruct subjects like Science, Mathematics, and English at the high school level. Eventually, about 3,500 teachers from this group moved on to pursue different job opportunities.
