A recent statement by All India United Democratic Front leader Karim Uddin Barbhuiya has ignited controversy in Assam’s political landscape, alleging that Assam Pradesh Congress Committee chief Bhupen Borah will defect to the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) after the Lok Sabha elections. The accusation, made during a press conference, shows growing concerns over political collaboration and influence in the state’s governance.

Barbhuiya’s claims suggest a close relationship between the Assam Chief Minister and Borah, with purported orchestration of candidacies across districts aligning with the Chief Minister’s preferences. While Borah had previously denied such speculations, the Chief Minister’s statements hint at preparations for Borah’s potential shift to the BJP in 2025.

The Chief Minister’s characterization of the Congress as a “reservoir of resources” for the BJP further fuels suspicions of political manoeuvring. He emphasizes ideological differences between the parties, framing support for Congress as an endorsement of Rahul Gandhi and support for BJP as backing Narendra Modi.

As the state braces for electoral contests, such revelations add layers of intrigue and uncertainty to the unfolding political narrative.
