In a significant development in Assam’s regional political landscape, Assam Jatiya Parishad (AJP) leader Lurinjyoti Gogoi has dismissed the possibility of a merger with Raijor Dal, favouring instead the creation of a common platform for regional parties. This stance comes a day after Sivasagar legislator and Raijor Dal chief Akhil Gogoi emphasized the need for a ‘strong regional force’ to protect Assam’s interests.

Akhil Gogoi had recently stressed the necessity of a robust regional entity in Assam, highlighting positive discussions with AJP regarding a potential merger. “Raijor Dal has already agreed to this merger. The ball is now in AJP’s court. Should they agree, we will create a new political party with a fresh constitution, forming a formidable opposition to the BJP,” he told the media. Akhil Gogoi expressed confidence that other smaller parties would join this new coalition, aiming to create a formidable front against the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).

However, Lurinjyoti Gogoi countered this proposal, advocating for a common platform rather than a full merger. He emphasized the importance of a unified front among regional parties to provide a better political alternative for the people of Assam. Lurinjyoti believes that collaboration without merging can still achieve their shared goals, maintaining the unique identities of each party while working together on common issues.

Lurinjyoti Gogoi’s stance highlights a strategic difference between the two leaders. While Akhil Gogoi envisions a single, consolidated party to challenge the BJP’s dominance, Lurinjyoti sees value in maintaining distinct party identities under a cooperative umbrella. This approach, he suggests, can foster unity and collaboration without the complexities and potential conflicts of a full merger.

Akhil Gogoi further mentioned that if the merger fails due to “technical” reasons, Raijor Dal plans to establish a ‘United Front’ to bring regional parties together under one banner. This move would reinforce the need for regional unity in the face of national political challenges. The proposed United Front would aim to consolidate regional strengths and present a cohesive opposition, leveraging the collective influence of Assam’s regional parties.

The discourse between the leaders of AJP and Raijor Dal shows the dynamic nature of regional politics in Assam. As both parties navigate their strategies, the focus remains on protecting Assam’s interests and providing a credible alternative to the current political establishment.
