DELHI ELECTRICITY BILLS SURGE BY 6-8%, SPARKS PUBLIC OUTCRY AND POLITICAL BACKLASH
Delhi has recently witnessed a notable surge in electricity bills, with an increase of six to eight percent. This change comes after the electricity distribution companies (discoms) revised the Power Purchase Adjustment Charge (PPAC). The revision has sparked significant public and political reactions, although officials have assured that those receiving subsidies will not be affected.
REASON OF THE HIKE
According to Delhi Cabinet Minister Atishi, the discoms are empowered to temporarily increase electricity prices, particularly during the peak summer months when there is a higher demand for power. This seasonal spike necessitates the purchase of additional power, which contributes to the higher costs passed on to consumers. The discoms’ decision aligns with their operational requirements to ensure a stable power supply during high-demand periods.
IMAPCT ON CONSUMERS
While the price surge is significant, it is important to note that the increase does not affect all consumers equally. Those who use up to 200 units of electricity and are eligible for subsidies remain unaffected by the price hike. This exemption aims to protect the most vulnerable consumers from the financial strain of increased utility costs.
PUBLIC PROTEST
Despite the exemptions for subsidized consumers, the decision has not been well-received by many
Delhi residents. Public discontent has manifested in widespread protests, with consumers taking to the streets to express their dissatisfaction with the hiked electricity bills. Protesters argue that the increased costs are unfair and place an undue burden on households already struggling with the high cost of living.
POLITICAL BACKLASH
The hike has not gone unnoticed, stirring severe criticism against the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has accused AAP of colluding with the discoms to unjustly increase electricity prices. BJP spokespersons have alleged that the price hike is a result of a nexus between the AAP government and the power companies, leading to an undue financial burden on the residents of Delhi.
