Northeast India's First Multilingual Foremost Media Network

The Indian Kayaking Canoeing Association (IKCA) conducted its selection trials at Whitewater Village in Shillong on May 18 and 19. These trials were crucial for assembling the national team that will participate in the 2024 ICF Canoe Slalom World Cup and Kayak Cross events, which are vital qualifiers for the Paris 2024 Olympic Games.

More than 25 athletes from various states, including Madhya Pradesh, Karnataka, and the hosting state of Meghalaya, competed in this high-stakes event. It not only highlighted Meghalaya’s growing influence in canoe slalom but also showcased its ability to host significant sporting competitions.

Elizabeth Vincent from Meghalaya stood out, achieving 3rd place in the K1 women’s category and securing 1st place in the Kayak Cross. In the K1 men’s category, Batskhem Nongbak from Meghalaya finished 6th, Pynshngaiñ Kurbah 8th, and Manbhalang Kharkrang 9th. Indra Sharma from Meghalaya secured 6th place in the C1 men’s category.

These athletes will represent India internationally, aiming to qualify for the canoe slalom events at the Paris 2024 Olympics. The trials in Shillong mark a significant moment for the region, demonstrating Meghalaya’s ability to endorse and host water sports at a global level.

By hosting the 2024 ICF Canoe Slalom World Championships trials, Meghalaya displays its dedication to promoting the sport within India. The selected team will compete against top global competitors, gaining invaluable experience and refining their skills for future contests.
