The French Ambassador to India, Thierry Mathou, is presently undertaking his inaugural trip to Shillong, Meghalaya.
The Ambassador embarked on a journey spanning over three kilometers to explore the Mawphlang Sacred Grove in its entirety, accompanied by Tambor Lyngdoh Mawphlang, the head of the Lyngdoh clan of Hima Mawphlang.
During the visit, the Ambassador displayed great enthusiasm in understanding the ethnographic composition of the sacred grove, which primarily consists of flora. The clan head elucidated that the forest, revered as the Mawphlang sacred grove, is sanctified by deities who serve as guardians, ensuring the preservation of the forest. Consequently, any activities deemed immoral are strictly prohibited within its bounds.
He underscored the outstanding relations between India and France and conveyed a desire to strengthen the connections with Meghalaya. As part of his schedule, a meeting with the Chief Minister has been arranged.
Mathou emphasized the possibility of collaboration in the realm of sports, an industry that holds significant appeal in the region. Additionally, he referred to the upcoming Olympic Games that will be hosted by France.
Additionally, he perceives culture as a possible avenue for engagement. Today, he explored a sacred forest and commended the local initiatives for environmental conservation. His departure is set for Monday, coinciding with a joint military drill involving the French and Indian armed forces in Shillong.
