External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar firmly denied US President Joe Biden’s recent description of India as “xenophobic” and grouping it with economically challenged countries. Jaishankar dismissed the idea, emphasizing that India’s economy is strong and that the nation has always been inclusive and receptive to various cultures.
Jaishankar underscored the exceptional status of India in global history, acknowledging its enduring practice of embracing individuals from diverse societies. He stressed that India’s Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) serves as evidence of its inclusive stance, aimed at offering sanctuary to those who require it.
In response to the critics of the CAA, Jaishankar raised doubts about the credibility of their assertions, specifically concerning the purported deprivation of citizenship for Muslims. He censured a portion of the Western media for their prejudiced portrayal, implying that their reporting was influenced by ideological agendas rather than impartial journalism.
Jaishankar also discussed the matter of media freedom in India, refuting low rankings as a politically driven assault. He cited protests at US colleges regarding the conflict in Gaza as a case of double standards in media portrayal, emphasizing the importance of distinguishing between unbiased journalism and politically driven motives.
During a fundraising event held in Washington on Thursday, President Joe Biden stirred up a heated debate by characterizing India, China, Japan, and Russia as “xenophobic” and attributing their economic challenges to xenophobia, in stark contrast to America’s flourishing economy, which is bolstered by immigration.
Biden attributed part of the US economy’s growth to its acceptance of immigrants, contrasting this with countries like China, Japan, Russia, and India, which he described as xenophobic and struggling economically. He emphasized the importance of immigrants, stating that they strengthen the country and contribute positively to its workforce. These remarks were made during his re-election campaign, underscoring his belief in the economic benefits of immigration to the United States.
After facing criticism, the White House provided further explanation on Biden’s comments, highlighting his appreciation for allies and partners. Press Secretary Karine Jean Pierre restated Biden’s overall point regarding America’s immigrant background, underscoring the role of immigration in fortifying the country.
