On Wednesday, the Assam Chah Mazdoor Sangha (ACMS) Margherita branch organized a lively celebration of International Workers’ Day, also known as May Day, at the Ledo Tea Estate playground.

The occasion observed a congregation of considerable scale, representing unity and companionship among tea plantation workers. The celebrations began with honouring distinguished guests, followed by the commencement of cultural performances and sporting activities, signifying a day of remembrance and acknowledgement for the workforce.

Jugal Parashar, the manager of Ledo Tea Estate, together with Gautam Dhanowar, the president of the Assam Chah Mazdoor Sangha Margherita branch, members of the press from Margherita and Ledo areas, as well as distinguished guests representing all 38 tea estates under the ACMS Margherita branch, attended the event. The festive atmosphere was further enhanced by over 10,000 workers from these estates.

Hari Nanda Gorh, the secretary of ACMS Margherita branch, emphasized the enduring dedication of the organization to championing the rights of tea garden workers. He stressed the significance of collective efforts in ensuring their well-being. Gorh pointed out that, for the last 18 years, the International Workers’ Day has been celebrated with enthusiasm and unity in different tea estates, with a continuous emphasis on empowering the workers.

This year, a managerial choice was made to acknowledge exceptional tea estates for their extensive development endeavours. The highest honour was awarded to Ledo Tea Estate, with Pengree Tea Estate securing the second position and Brahmajan Tea Estate attaining the third position, as declared by Gorh during the occasion.

The presence of representatives from the District Legal Service Authority Tinsukia further emphasized the importance of the event, highlighting the extensive community involvement and backing for the labour movement.
