Tornadoes in Oklahoma killed four people, including a baby, and knocked out power to thousands on Sunday after a devastating round of severe weather destroyed homes in a rural community and injured hundreds across the state.
Over 20,000 homes and businesses remained without power hours after the tornadoes began Saturday evening. The worst damage was in the small town of Sulphur having a population of 5,000 where a tornado flattened many downtown structures, overturned cars and buses, and ripped roofs off homes within 15 blocks of downtown Sulphur.
In Sulphur, about 30 people were injured, including some in a bar at the time of the tornado. In Oklahoma, hospitals across the state reported around 100 injuries, including some that appear to have been sustained from debris, according to a news release from the Oklahoma department of emergency management.
The scores of documented tornadoes that have wrecked devastation in the middle of the country since Friday were joined by the fatal weather in Oklahoma. In Pottawattamie County, Iowa, authorities announced on Sunday that a man who had been badly hurt in a tornado on Friday had passed away.
Authorities in Sulphur, Oklahoma, said that the tornado started in a city park and tore through the downtown area, flipping cars and tearing off the walls and roofs of brick structures. The buildings that held were completely destroyed, including their windows and doors.
