Assam Jatiya Parishad (AJP) leader and Dibrugarh Lok Sabha candidate, Lurinjyoti Gogoi, addressed the media, stating that Union Minister Kiren Rijiju’s recent remarks indicate that the Chakma community is exploring Assam for citizenship under the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) due to the Arunachal government’s refusal to grant them citizenship.

Gogoi emphasized that this situation stems from the CAA, which he believes undermines the rights of indigenous peoples and is a joint effort by both state and central governments. He reiterated that the population of the state has not accepted the CAA and will continue to oppose it.

Gogoi highlighted the CAA as a significant issue in the current Lok Sabha election, noting that individuals expressing dissent towards the act have actively participated in the initial phase of the election. He voiced concerns that the CAA might lead the indigenous population of the state into a period of uncertainty. Additionally, Gogoi affirmed that the people of Assam have not embraced the CAA thus far and will persist in their opposition.

Bhupen Borah, a prominent figure in the Assam Congress, has accused Himanta Biswa Sarma, the Chief Minister of the state, of orchestrating a perilous scheme against Assam.

Borah’s accusation stems from reports suggesting the acceptance of an order from Amit Shah regarding the resettlement of 5 lakh Hajong-Chakma refugees in Assam. This information was inadvertently revealed by Union Minister Kiren Rijiju during a press conference.

Previously, Rijiju had emphasized that the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) would benefit Arunachal Pradesh, asserting its stance of not accommodating refugees from neighbouring nations. Borah firmly stated that the people of Assam would oppose this proposal, and he anticipated their dissent to be reflected in the voting patterns on April 26th and May 7th.
