Severe rainfall led to sudden flooding in Oman, located on the eastern side of the Arabian Peninsula, resulting in the deaths of a minimum of 17 individuals while rescue teams worked to find survivors, as reported by officials on Monday.
Authorities reported that a driver and a group of school children lost their lives in a tragic accident when their vehicle was overtaken.
Officials from civil defense disclosed the number of fatalities caused by the heavy rains, with North Al Sharqiyah province in Oman bearing the brunt of the impact. The Royal Oman Police and the Omani military were mobilized to the province to assist in relocating citizens from inundated areas, as reported by the state-run Oman News Agency.
The sultanate frequently experiences flash flooding due to heavy rainfall, which entices the inquisitive individuals to venture out of their residences towards the adjacent dry riverbeds, referred to as “wadi” in Arabic. During these floods, these riverbeds can rapidly fill up and sweep away both people and vehicles.
