The government has reported that heavy rainfall in Tanzania over the past fortnight has resulted in the tragic loss of 58 lives due to flooding.
The government revealed the number of casualties on Sunday evening while the country was still being battered by heavy rainfall. Tanzania’s rainy season typically peaks in April, but this year it has been made worse by the El Nino phenomenon, leading to both droughts and floods worldwide.
The government reported that the coastal area experienced the most severe impact, affecting 126,831 individuals. According to government representative Mobhare Matinyi, essential resources such as food have already been provided to the affected population. Additionally, he mentioned that Tanzania intends to build 14 dams as a measure to mitigate future flooding incidents.
East Africa is currently facing intense rainfall, leading to flooding in Kenya which has resulted in the loss of at least 13 lives. Infrastructure has suffered damage as a consequence, prompting authorities to advise residents in flood-prone regions to relocate. The peak of the rainfall is anticipated to occur by the conclusion of the current month.
