During a significant operation targeting the illicit transportation of gold, Mumbai Customs confiscated over 10.02 kilograms of gold worth ₹6.03 crore in a span of four days at the international airport in the city. This was carried out in 12 separate instances, as reported by officials on Monday.
The Mumbai Customs Airport Commissionerate made a significant discovery of concealed gold in multiple forms, including gold dust hidden in wax, crude jewellery, and cleverly concealed gold bars found both on the bodies of passengers and inside their luggage. The officials further reported that three individuals have been apprehended in connection with this illicit activity.
The customs officials intercepted three foreign nationals on a flight from Nairobi to Mumbai who were discovered to be carrying 24 KT melted gold bars weighing 5733 grams cleverly concealed inside their hand baggage. Additionally, six Indian nationals traveling from Dubai, Sharjah, and Abu Dhabi were also intercepted by the officials. They were found to be carrying 2670 grams of gold concealed in various ways, including inside their rectum, on their body, and inside their undergarments.
In two additional instances, individuals from India who were traveling from Jeddah and Bangkok were discovered to be concealing 1379 grams of gold. The gold was found hidden in their rectum and on their person.
