Amarjit Singh, alias Bittu, the primary suspect in the murder of Baba Tarsem Singh, the Kar Seva head of Nanakmatta Gurdwara, was fatally shot during a confrontation with the Uttarakhand STF and Haridwar police in the Thana Bhagwanpur locality of the city on Tuesday morning.
Baba Tarsem Singh was killed on March 28 at the shrine’s premises by two men riding a motorcycle in Udham Singh Nagar district. The suspects were on a motorcycle when they were instructed to stop by the authorities in Haridwar’s Bhagwanpur area after midnight on Tuesday.
Amarjit Singh, the shooter with a reward of ₹1 lakh on his capture, met his demise while his partner managed to escape. The combined efforts of the Uttarakhand Special Task Force and Haridwar Police have been initiated to locate the fugitive offender.
The authorities have confirmed that Amarjit Singh was facing over 16 charges on murder. According to a news article, witnesses claimed that individuals on a motorcycle entered the dera’s premises and shot Tarsem Singh, who was sitting on a chair indoors. Five individuals, one of whom is a retired IAS officer, were implicated in the murder five days later.
The Nanakmatta Sahib Gurdwara holds great significance as a sacred place of worship for the Sikh community. Situated along the Rudrapur-Tanakpur route in the Udham Singh Nagar district of the state, it is highly revered by devotees.
