Iran has reported the arrest of individuals affiliated with the ISIL (ISIS) organization who were allegedly plotting an assault towards the conclusion of the sacred Muslim period of Ramadan.

On Saturday, the authorities announced that Mohammad Zaker, also known as “Ramesh”, along with two others, were apprehended in Karaj, located west of Tehran, after engaging in clashes, as reported by Iranian media. Additionally, eight individuals who were with them were taken into custody.

In January, two explosions occurred in Iran during a memorial event commemorating the fourth anniversary of the assassination of Qassem Soleimani, a prominent commander, in Iraq in 2020. These attacks, resulting in the tragic loss of nearly 100 lives and numerous injuries, were claimed by the Islamic State. It is important to note that the Islamic State holds a deep-seated animosity towards Iran’s predominant Shi’ite sect.

In January, Iran arrested 35 individuals, among them a high-ranking member of ISIS-Khorasan (ISIS-K), the Afghanistan-based branch of the Islamic State. These arrests were made in connection with the twin bombings that occurred on January 3 in the south-eastern city of Kerman.

Armed men from the separatist Sunni group Jaish al-Adl launched an attack on two bases of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) in the southeastern border province of Sistan-Baluchestan on Thursday. The funerals of the armed forces members who lost their lives in the attack were conducted in their hometowns, such as in the western province of Lorestan and northern Mazandaran, on Saturday.
