Meta Platforms, the parent company of Facebook, Instagram, and Threads, plans to introduce labels for audio, image, and video content created using artificial intelligence, identifying them as “Made with AI” starting next month in order to combat the spread of deceptive content across its platforms.
The company endeavours to provide reassurance to both users and the government regarding the potential dangers of deepfakes. The influential social media platform has further stated that it will cease the removal of manipulated images and audio that do not explicitly violate its guidelines. Instead, it will rely on labelling and contextualization to ensure that freedom of speech is not needlessly compromised.
The board issued a cautionary statement in response to concerns about the widespread abuse of AI-driven applications for spreading false information on various platforms during a crucial election year, not just in the United States but globally.
Meta’s latest labels, “Made with AI,” will detect content produced or modified using artificial intelligence, such as videos, audio, and images. Moreover, a more noticeable label will be applied to content considered highly likely to mislead the public. These adjustments are a direct result of feedback from Meta’s oversight board, an independent body responsible for reviewing the company’s content moderation choices.
