The ban on the sales, manufacture and flying of kites in Karachi was enforced by the commissioner on Saturday following numerous incidents of severe injuries caused by the use of loose kite strings.
On March 27, a young individual residing in Karachi was admitted to the hospital due to sustaining severe injuries caused by a stray kite string in the Azizabad locality while operating a motorcycle. The victim, known as Awais, aged 20, became entangled in the kite string while riding, leading to his subsequent hospitalization. Thankfully, his condition was deemed stable following the provision of medical care.
In another occurrence, a young boy was injured by a stray kite string while traveling on a motorcycle with his father in the Nazimabad region, leading to his prompt admission to the hospital.
Moreover, subsequent to a fatal event in Faisalabad involving a young man’s death caused by a comparable kite string mishap, the Punjab police have launched a campaign against kite flying throughout the province.
Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz has taken decisive action in light of these incidents by issuing a directive to clamp down on the manufacturing, selling, and buying of chemicals utilized in kite flying. Furthermore, an inquiry officer from the Punjab police was apprehended on suspicion of receiving illicit payments from manufacturers of chemical kite strings in Faisalabad. Dedicated police team swiftly intervened and caught Ibrahim, the investigation in-charge stationed at Ghulam Mohammadabad police station, in the act of accepting bribes from these manufacturers.
