The Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas has clarified that Aadhaar-based biometric e-KYC is not mandatory for all LPG consumers, addressing widespread confusion among users. The government stated that only those consumers who have not yet completed their e-KYC are required to undergo Aadhaar verification, while existing verified users do not need to repeat the process.

The clarification comes amid concerns that LPG supply could be disrupted without fresh authentication. However, the ministry has assured that services will remain uninterrupted for consumers who have already completed their verification.

Officials said the e-KYC process is part of an ongoing initiative to eliminate duplicate or fake LPG connections, ensure that subsidies reach genuine beneficiaries, and improve transparency in distribution systems. The move is also aimed at strengthening accountability in the delivery of essential services.

To ease the process, the government has enabled users to complete e-KYC from home through mobile applications of LPG providers such as Indane, Bharat Gas, and HP Gas. Consumers can verify their details using Aadhaar-linked OTP or face authentication, making the process quick and accessible.

For beneficiaries under the Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana (PMUY), periodic e-KYC may be required to continue receiving subsidy benefits. Authorities have emphasised that the process is free of cost and designed to avoid inconvenience to consumers.

The clarification highlights the government’s broader push toward digitally verified welfare systems, aimed at improving efficiency while preventing misuse, even as it reassures that genuine LPG users will not face disruption in services.
