Elon Musk has sent a clear signal about accountability for AI-generated content on his social media platform X. He said anyone who uses the platform’s AI service Grok to create illegal or inappropriate content will face the same consequences as someone who uploads such content directly to X. That message was shared in response to criticism about the spread of objectionable AI-generated images.

The warning came shortly after India’s Ministry of Electronics and IT (MeitY) ordered X to remove all obscene, vulgar and unlawful material, including content generated by Grok, and to provide a compliance report within 72 hours. The government’s directive stressed that failure to act could result in legal consequences under Indian law.

According to the ministry, complaints had arisen about users creating fake accounts and using Grok to generate and share obscene images of women in a manner deemed derogatory and indecent, prompting renewed scrutiny of AI content moderation.

X has also stated it will remove illegal content, permanently suspend accounts that violate rules, and work with law enforcement and local governments where necessary. This includes material defined as illegal under local laws, such as child sexual abuse content.

Musk’s stance reflects a broader theme in tech: AI tools don’t remove user responsibility. Even if the content is generated by an AI like Grok, the person who prompts and shares it can be held accountable under platform policy and local law.
