To combat the increasing number of violent dog attacks occurring nationwide, particularly against children and the elderly (which can result in fatalities), the Center on Wednesday banned the importation, sale, and breeding of 23 dangerous dog breeds that are deemed a threat to human life.
The Department of Animal Husbandry and Dairying reportedly wrote to all states, requesting that local authorities not issue licenses or permits to individuals for the breeding or sale of these “banned” dogs. Additionally, owners of these prohibited canines were advised to sterilize their animals in order to stop them from procreating.
In recent months, there have been several cases of dog bite fatalities around the nation. In one incidence, a stray dog attacked 20 individuals in the Bilaspur district of Himachal Pradesh, causing injuries. A kid in Delhi was admitted to the hospital for 17 days last month following a Pitbull bite. Another incidence happened in Ghaziabad last week when a Pitbull attacked a 10-year-old girl, seriously injuring her.
The list of banned dog breeds includes Pitbull Terrier, Tosa Inu, American Staffordshire Terrier, Fila Brasileiro, Dogo Argentino, American bulldog, Boerboel, Kangal, Central Asian Shepherd Dog, Caucasian Shepherd Dog, South Russian Shepherd, Tornjak, Sarplaninac, Japanese Tosa and Akita, Mastiffs, Rottweiler, Terriers, Rhodesian Ridgeback, Wolf dogs, Canario, Akbash dog, Moscow Guard dog, Cane Corso, and every dog of the type commonly known as a ‘Ban Dog’.
