A horrifying shooting in the heart of Midtown Manhattan sent shockwaves across New York City on Monday evening. Armed with an AR-15–style rifle, 27-year-old Shane Devon Tamura stormed into a high-rise commercial building at 345 Park Avenue, fatally shooting four people, including an off-duty NYPD officer, before taking his own life. The brutal act unfolded in one of the most secure and high-profile corporate zones in the city.

“The face of evil entered our city today.”

Those were the words of a senior NYPD official after the mass shooting that left the city stunned. The building housed prominent firms such as Blackstone, the NFL, and KPMG, all of which went into emergency lockdown as gunfire erupted around 6:30 pm.

What Happened?

Witnesses recall panic erupting as the attacker, dressed in tactical gear and armed with a semi-automatic rifle, opened fire in the building lobby. According to law enforcement officials, his first target was a police officer working private security. He then fired at random, striking a woman hiding behind a pillar and a security guard behind the front desk. A fourth victim was killed after Tamura rode the elevator to the 33rd floor.

“He didn’t say a word. He just shot,” said a survivor who asked not to be named. “People were screaming, running — some barricaded doors using chairs and tables.”

In total, five people died in the incident, including the shooter. One individual remains in critical condition, while several others were injured in the chaos.

Who Was Shane Devon Tamura?

Originally from Hawaii and later residing in Las Vegas, Tamura lived an unremarkable life on the surface. He worked as a casino security guard and held a valid concealed carry permit issued in Nevada. Police say Tamura had no prior criminal record but had documented mental health struggles, the specifics of which remain under investigation.

He had legally purchased the rifle used in the attack for approximately $500. Inside his vehicle, parked nearby, police recovered additional weapons, magazines, medication, and a rifle case.

“He had issues, clearly,” said one law enforcement source. “But no one around him saw this coming.”

Former classmates described Tamura as energetic and humorous. “He used to make people laugh — he was the clown of the group,” said Caleb Clarke, a former teammate. “I still can’t believe he could do something like this.”

The Victims

Among the four victims was NYPD officer Didarul Islam, 36, who was working off-duty security when he tried to intervene. Originally from Bangladesh, Islam had served with the NYPD for nearly four years. He leaves behind a pregnant wife and two young children.

“He was a man of faith, of service, and he loved this city deeply,” said Mayor Eric Adams during a press conference.

Three other civilians were killed, though authorities have not yet released their names. One more remains in critical condition.

A City Shaken

Tamura reportedly drove across the country before the attack, making stops in Colorado and Colombia, before arriving in Manhattan hours before the shooting. His motives are still unknown, but investigators are exploring both personal and ideological angles.

“This was not just an act of violence — it was an act of terror in the heart of our city,” said a city official.

Security has been ramped up in major commercial zones following the attack, and grief counseling centers have been set up for affected employees and families.
