In a world where judgments tend to be issued quicker than understanding can bloom, it’s time for society to stop and think. Everybody has a right, a right to grow, to redeem, to be heard, and to belong.
How many times have we dismissed someone for where they’re from, past errors, or because they simply didn’t “fit the mould”? Ex-offenders, recovering alcoholics and drug addicts, school leavers, gay people, lesbian people, or sufferers of mental illnesses—many of them bear labels that no one can see but everyone knows. But are those labels just? Shouldn’t it be about the journey, not the stumble?
Granting an opportunity does not entail turning a blind eye to what happened. It entails recognising their humanness and having faith in their ability to do good.
Consider Rani, the single mother from Bihar who used to beg at traffic lights. She now owns a stitching center and has five other women working there, all like her, because someone believed in her. Or Arjun, the former drug addict from Mumbai, who was turned down by dozens of employers, before one tiny start-up gave him a chance. He is now in charge of their outreach team and mentors others like him.
Transformation occurs when society trades judgment for empathy.
Inclusion is not charity. It’s fairness. When we invite in someone who was previously excluded, we’re not just assisting them—we’re making our community stronger. Diversity of experience yields innovation, adaptability, and richer human understanding.
Education, work, friendship, and forgiveness—these are not luxuries. They’re rights everyone should be entitled to, particularly when they’re attempting to improve themselves. Rather than pose the question, “Why should we trust them?” Maybe the question to ask is, “What could they become if we do?”
As a people, let’s not judge individuals on their worst day. Let’s judge ourselves on how we react to them. Compassion isn’t weakness—it’s wisdom. And giving someone second chances might be the greatest thing we bring to humanity.
