In the Hyderabad betting app scam, the Enforcement Directorate (ED) has registered a money laundering case against 29 public figures, including leading film stars Vijay Deverakonda, Prakash Raj, Rana Daggubati, and others. The case stems from a First Information Report (FIR) filed by Cyberabad Police earlier this year, which alleged the illegal promotion of online betting platforms by celebrities and influencers.

Those named include actors Manchu Lakshmi, Nidhi Agarwal, Ananya Nagalla, and television anchor Srimukhi, among others. The ED is reportedly examining financial transactions and the digital trail of these personalities to trace possible proceeds of crime and money laundering activities linked to the scam.

According to the FIR, charges have been invoked under Sections 318(4) and 112, read with Section 49 of the Bharat Nyay Sanhita, Section 4 of the Telangana State Gaming Act, and Section 66-D of the Information Technology Act — all of which deal with fraud, illegal gaming promotion, and cyber deception.

The actors allegedly promoted betting platforms such as Junglee Rummy, A23, Yolo 247, Fairplay, and Jeet Win via pop-up ads and social media, encouraging users to participate in online gambling activities — many of which are banned in several Indian states.

Celebs Respond to Allegations

Veteran actor and political commentator Prakash Raj broke his silence, clarifying that he had ended his association with a gaming app years ago.
“Yes, I promoted a gaming platform in 2016, but I voluntarily stepped away in 2017 after realising its implications. Since then, I’ve not endorsed any such app,” said Prakash Raj in a post on X. “If the authorities seek clarification, I’m ready to cooperate fully.”

Actor Rana Daggubati also issued a statement, asserting that his involvement was limited, legal, and ended long ago.
“My endorsement was for a skill-based gaming platform back in 2017. It was restricted to regions where it was legally permitted, and my legal team ensured full compliance,” Daggubati said, pointing to Supreme Court guidelines that differentiate skill-based games from gambling.

As per sources, Vijay Deverakonda’s name has been linked with the promotion of A23, an online rummy platform.
The ED investigation is still in preliminary stages. Officials say summons may be issued soon to the accused celebrities to record their statements.
