India is seeing a fresh surge in COVID-19 cases, with Kerala (273), Mumbai (95), and Delhi (23) leading the rise this May. Most cases are mild, but states are stepping up health preparedness.
In Kerala, masks are now mandatory in hospitals. Delhi has reactivated emergency protocols, directing hospitals to ensure availability of oxygen, beds, and vaccines. Mumbai accounts for nearly 90% of Maharashtra’s recent cases, though only 16 are hospitalised.
Karnataka has 35 active cases, including a 9-month-old baby under treatment. Testing has been mandated for all SARI/ILI patients. Andhra Pradesh, while not heavily hit, has issued alerts and stockpiled vaccines and equipment.
The JN.1 sub-variant of Omicron is believed to be behind the surge, but no COVID-related deaths have been reported. Authorities are urging citizens to follow basic precautions without panic.
