Assam University has been plunged into controversy following grave allegations of sexual harassment, intimidation, and abuse of authority against an assistant professor. According to a First Information Report (FIR) lodged at the university police outpost on Sunday, the accused is alleged to have engaged in repeated misconduct involving female students.
The complaint, filed by multiple girl students, outlines a disturbing pattern of behaviour. The professor reportedly made sexually explicit and defamatory remarks, threatened students with academic retaliation, and tried to coerce them into giving false statements in his favour. The FIR also mentions that students were summoned to isolated locations—including restaurants and private cabins—often at odd hours, where the accused allegedly used sexually abusive language and passed vulgar comments about the personal lives of students and colleagues.
The complainants claim the accused exploited his academic position to intimidate and degrade them during what were supposed to be professional interactions. The case has sparked outrage on campus, with student bodies and activists demanding a swift investigation and strict action.
University authorities have yet to release an official statement, but pressure is mounting for transparent handling of the case and protection for the complainants. An internal inquiry and police investigation are expected to proceed in parallel.
