Prior to the Lok Sabha elections, security forces engaged in a significant anti-insurgency operation in Bijapur district of Chhattisgarh, resulting in the death of 8 Naxalites. The district falls within the Bastar Lok Sabha constituency, scheduled to vote in the initial phase of the general elections on April 19.

The gunfire occurred at approximately 6 am within a wooded area near Lendra village, falling under the jurisdiction of Gangaloor police station. This incident unfolded during an anti-Naxal operation conducted by a collaborative force of security personnel. The operation comprised members from the District Reserve Guard, Special Task Force, Central Reserve Police Force, and the esteemed Commando Battalion for Resolute Action (CoBRA).

Following the end of gunfire, four Naxalites’ corpses were discovered at the scene, accompanied by a light machine gun and various other weaponry. It is worth mentioning that Naxalites execute their Tactical Counter Offensive Campaign (TCOC) during the summer months, specifically from March to June, intensifying their operations. The Bastar region has witnessed a significant surge in assaults on security forces throughout this timeframe.

On April 19, the Bijapur district, which falls under the Bastar Lok Sabha constituency, will participate in the initial phase of the 2024 Lok Sabha elections.

In a separate occurrence that took place on Monday, April 1, two notorious Naxalites, who were being sought after for cash rewards, were fatally shot during a confrontation with the police in Balaghat district of Madhya Pradesh. This information was relayed by a police official.

According to the police, a total of 41 Naxalites have been killed in various clashes with security forces in the Bastar region, which includes seven districts including Bijapur. This marks the latest incident in a series of encounters this year.
