On Sunday afternoon, a nor‘wester, accompanied by a ‘mini tornado’, wreaked havoc in Jalpaiguri, resulting in the unfortunate deaths of 5 individuals who were tragically crushed under falling trees. This devastating incident occurred at two separate locations within a span of 5 minutes.
The dead have been identified as Dwijendra Narayan Sarkar (52), Anima Roy (49), Jogen Roy (70) and Samar Roy (64). Several hundred individuals were hospitalized due to injuries, despite initial assessments indicating significant damage to property in the Jalpaiguri Sadar and Maynaguri blocks.
On Sunday night, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee altered her planned activities and arrived in Jalpaiguri. Additionally, she assessed the current state of affairs and paid a visit to the Jalpaiguri Super Specialty Hospital to offer support to those affected by the cyclone.
Mamata Banerjee spoke to the media after a disaster that claimed 5 lives, with 2 others in critical condition. The chief minister reassured that the government was providing necessary help and standing by the affected. She acknowledged the loss of lives and expressed gratitude to the administration for their disaster management efforts.
